Minutes of general committee meeting at Kensington Arms 21/7/2010

Attendees: Fiona, Giz, Nick, Paddy, Lucy, Ben, DanFT

DART

Thanks to all involved in last course for making it a success - especially DanFT. Slightly rough ride and a few chinks in the armour have developed that need sorting out.

  1. Dan has developed hints and tips for course organisers. He suggested they could be updatable on the website for future managers.
  2. Suggestion of a laminated photo of the setup for each station to aid set up. BH may already have these, but if not he will organise
  3. The kit boxes need a good sort out. Volunteers please. As does the paper work. A hard copy of the faculty handbook would be useful in the set - next course manager to organise this please.
  4. The alt blades are a persistent problem. We can borrow from Bath as offered by Chris Seller. If this doesn't work out we will dip into the cash pot and buy some - Polio/Hnederson
  5. Ambu-scopes are ordered but we will continue to treat Storz nicely as our partners in education. Ambu will be used for departmental teaching, DART-sim and AFOI ski run mainly.
  6. The team-brief at the start of the day was a great success. We must still facilitate the party line and try and discourage sideshows from candidates or faculty! Lets all say no more than 10 minutes intro talk before hands-on.
  7. Sideshows will also be limited if we keep consultants on their regular stations - makes things much slicker and higher quality.
  8. Nick mentioned an electronic mechanism for faculty recruitment. BH will put on thinking cap.
  9. ILMA station was plagued with kit problems. Perhaps we need new ILMAs to keep it running nicely - NW to investigate.
  10. Aintree station - need to reinforce differences between Aintree and Cook airway exchange and Frova. Recent high profile airway death from Frova apparently.

DART for consultants/SAS

  1. It's coming up soon and we need to iron out all of above in time to keep it slick and professional.
  2. We all need to advertise it in our hospitals. BH will put poster on website for you to download. Not many candidates signed up yet.
  3. Faculty: have confirmed Drs Wharton, Nickells, Olday, Vanner, Seller and Cook. Trainees will include Howes, Kelly, FT. NW to continue recruiting.

Paediatrics

  1. Guy Bailey / Judith Nolan suggested a paediatric station within DART. Discussion suggested there was no way to fit this in, however a paed case in DART sim would be entirely apt. We could invite paed anaesthetists to come as most of DAS applies to older children and adolescents.

 AFOI

  1. No date yet. Depends on theatre space as usual
  2. Evening / morning split was successful. We'll try it again next time
  3. Recruitment a problem - interest and drop out rate. BH to pitch it at any trainees with bronchoscopic experience. Also invite any consultant or SAS grade. Please promote around your hospital. BH to make a poster and put it on website.
  4. Dropouts - FK now barred. (only joking Fi). We want to keep it free but need a cash deposit to prevent dropouts. £50 cheque per candidate will now be sent to NW (payable to dept anaesthesia at BRI) which is returned when they turn up.

DARTsim

  1. Booked for sept 1st, but this is Final FRCA exam day. Too bad as no other slots until new year. If recruitment no use, we'll use it as a dry run for DAS/Cheltenham
  2. Discussion about having 2 groups and debriefing one whilst simulating with the other, then switching over. My be more efficient but makes a top and tail problem.
  3. We need at least 4 faculty members per course - 3 in the sim and one debriefing the other group. Aim for 5 + 5 delegates.
  4. Again, we need more presence! BH will do poster and logo hopefully. To appear on website.

Cheltenham / DAS

  1. We're not really up to speed yet. FK, NW and BH to work with Jo Cornes to sort this all out.
  2. Current plan for DARTsim style stations as well as DART stations.

General Discussion

  1. Big-up to Jonboy and Barnsey. Multiple toasts etc
  2. Anyone know how to make our courses fit onto the Revalidation Matrix? DFT to look into please.
  3. We should advertise all our courses at each course, of course.
  4. Website. Please please use the forum. I will give each of you author status so you can easily add comments and attachments to this site too.

That's all for now folks!
